Energy efficient House
At the beginning of this project i was put in a group with Patrick Heslip, Elise Chassman, and Arno Puppo. This project we where assigned was unlike any other. We where given the task of, instead one big project, 9 small projects.
Our first project was the on Atomic structure, state, and heat. Some of the things we learned about atoms where:
1. There are 45,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms in a sugar cube sized air spot
2. There are recycled atoms in your body from stars and other people
3. The nucleus in an atom is the same ratio to a fly in a gym
Vocabulary Terms for the projects:
nucleus- center of the atom
molecule- multiple atoms bonded together
compound- type of molecule with different types of elements in a molecule
isotope- atom with unusual number of neutrons
ion- atom with unusual number of electrons
heat- a form of energy
conduction- transfer of heat through a solid
convection- transfer of heat through a liquid
radiation- transfer of heat through waves, particles, and rays
insulation- bad at conducting

Our second project was on a solar water heater design: We where set to the task of making a device that heated water using only the sun. Then we put water through it and saw how much the heat rises in 30 minutes.Me and my group decided to make our heater with a box which was the outside of the heater, tin foil which to help reflect light in, serran wrap that create a green house effect, a funnel that we poured the water into, some copper tubing for the water to go through and be heated up by, a jug for the water to end up in, yarn which insulation around the bottle, and a nozzle that helped us get the water from the jug. Our design made 8,363.628 joules of energy.
Our third project was the solar angles and how it changes during seasons:
Our fourth project was our day lighting design. For this project we where supposed to create a how that could produce the most sunlight at anytime of day.

Then we used tape, cardboard and , tinfoil to make it a scale model.
Our fifth project was our site selection project. For this project we where tasked with finding the best site on campus to build our house . We graded for all of the following things on a scale of 1 to 3. Sun/shade ratio, privacy, temperature, noisiness, accessibility, space, camo, sun timed in day, landscape, and wind exposure. My groups verdict was on a nice spot fairly shaded by tries near the edge of the school campus.
Our sixth project was our materials testing lab. For this project we tested different materials for heat loss and heat gain.
Our seventh project was our building design for a cold frame for our garden and a reflector panel for the north window of our solar studio:
Our eighth project was our justification project. For this project we where supposed to give a reason why building an efficient home off the grid would be good. The project is in this link tinyurl.com/k7wl
Our ninth and final project was our wind turbine. For this project we where set with the task of making the most efficient wind turbine:
Refection:
Over the course of 2 months i am proud of the work my group put into all 9 of the projects and there where many peaks to the project. One of the peaks was my group they all did there share and contributed in some way to the project. Another peak was the reflector panel and cold frame, because i felt me and my group did very well on understanding the need of the project and filliping it . Also the daylight design was a peak because how much fun me and my group had during it and how it developed our relationships with each other. Although these projects where mostly great there where a few bad things. One of the negatives was my groups trouble with making the model for our cold frame . Also we had lots of trouble with getting our reflector panel to not brake. Finally I had some trouble with fully understanding some things over this long course of learning . Even though there where some negatives to these projects there was also many positives and that's why i feel the past 2 months where great and i am happy i learned what i learned.
